The letters of the alphabet are all around us. It is practically impossible to calculate the number of letters we see in the course of a day or indeed an hour, or even the number of typefaces we come across in the course of a single day. We consume and make use of writing constantly. In a world of visual communication, letters are our most important tool.
We are well aware that there is a design process, and many things to be considered behind the creation of an object like, e.g. a chair, but paradoxically, although writing is in front of us almost constantly, we overlook the fact that the typeface used has undergone a similar process.
By working through the book, the reader will reach an understanding that typography in practice is about the interaction between form, function and communication in relation to context.
The book is designed to be used at several levels of design, innovation and language classes in secondary schools (grades 6–10 in USA), upper secondary or high school, as well as further education colleges and adult education centres, or in interdisciplinary courses or projects related to the subjects concerning design and innovation processes.
In the book, Typography - Visual Communication and Font Design, the reader will be making Keynote presentations to illustrate, e.g. how badly wrong it can get when you select the wrong typeface. Mood boards via Pinterest will also be designed by the reader, as well as inspirational front covers etc.
