Kerosene Lamps:

In the late 1700s, lamps were first used. They burned whale oil or lecithin and were used alongside candles. Kerosene lamps were popularized in the 1850s. These lamps were portable and could be carried around the house.

Even though gas was being piped to larger cities for wall lighting at the same time as they were, kerosene lamps remained in use in rural areas of the country right up until the 1930s.

Over time, antique lamp shades have evolved tremendously from their primitive origins to the intricate and colorful designs that are more often associated with antique lamps. Shades for oil and kerosene lamps started out as simple glass covers.

They were usually in the form of a vase, which allowed air to flow through the lamp but kept it from being blown away. The kerosene lampshades became shorter and taller over time. This caused the flame to rise towards the top of each lamp, making it shine brighter.

Electricity began to be used in the late 1800s. It gradually overtook kerosene and became the modern form of lighting. The lamps became more comfortable and softened as electricity was used to power them.

Lamps became more than a necessity. Lamps were considered status symbols and indicators of wealth. More and more elaborate lamps were created with the ever-increasing skill needed by craftsmen to make them.
