What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body uses glucose or sugar. Glucose is the main energy source for the body and diabetes can lead to serious health complications if not treated. There are different types of diabetes, but all involve problems with blood sugar control.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. About 5 to 10 percent of all pregnant women develop GDM, which usually goes away after the baby is born. If left untreated, GDM can lead to long-term health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. This results in low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) and often requires daily insulin injections to control symptoms. Type 1 diabetes typically strikes during childhood or young adulthood and usually lasts for life unless it is treated with a combination of medications and lifestyle changes. In severe cases, type 1 diabetes can lead to death due to cardiac arrest or stroke.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t use insulin well. Type 2 diabetes often starts slowly over time and without any obvious symptoms.
